Data from various crops, such as lettuce, radishes, strawberries, lemons, peppers, and herbs cultivated using Sollum's 100% programmable dynamic LED lighting, shows remarkable results and corroborates the benefits of full-spectrum modulation. Higher crop yields of up to 40%, depending on the plant, with the additional bonus of better produce appearance, taste, and longer shelf life.

In addition, apart from crop yield, greenhouse productivity is promoted thanks to the capacity of the solution to apply light treatments at different stages of growth. These treatments such as the addition of far-red or blue light, impact plant morphology, which can facilitate harvesting operations or cater to desired consumer preferences. For example, researchers have found that blue LED light induces a higher number of flower clusters and increases the final yield of strawberry plants and a higher biomass accumulation. And far-red light can accelerate strawberry ripening.

Greenhouse production must meet a major challenge: energy efficiency. The energy-intensive requirements for lighting, heating, ventilation and air conditioning increase operational costs.

By using only, the necessary amount and quality of light for any given crop, even allowing the shutdown of fixtures in unused zones, Sollum’s technology enables significant electricity cost savings. But there’s more. With the SUNaaS platform’s full programmability, greenhouse growers can adjust their energy consumption based on a variety of factors to take advantage of low-period rates, essentially shifting part of their energy consumption to more favorable price periods. And the changes can be automated on the SUNaaS platform – no manual intervention necessary. SUNaaS also enables growers to fix electricity caps on their energy use to manage peak consumption and high-cost periods more efficiently, which can vary from one electricity supplier to another. The flexibility to modify the cap at any time ensures that growers can adjust their energy use in response to both planned and unexpected load-shedding events, minimizing their impact on operations.

Also from a cost perspective, our solution integrates seamlessly with other greenhouse systems, including crucial climate controls, for a more comprehensive management of these high-costs items.

More and more growers experience how to use dynamic lighting to help control pests. Pests and biologicals both have vision systems and photoreceptors, and greenhouse pests and biologicals are sensitive to certain wavelengths over others. Because of this, light spectrum and light intensity can affect the activity of pests and biologicals in the greenhouse. For example, the color and intensity of supplemental lighting can impact pests’ perception of the sticky trap. Promising studies are underway on the behavior of pests and biologicals under different light spectra, photoperiod and intensities.

In addition, we know that applied early on, far-red can also boost strawberry stem elongation, facilitating scouting for pests and diseases. And as we’ve mentioned before, dynamic lighting allows growers to create and recreate lighting zones at any point. Light-assisted pest management allows growers to create a lighting zone over an infested area alone to keep the pest from spreading into the rest of the greenhouse.
